Oh the drama of junior high and high school. This is the part I *never* miss! I was right there in the scene with you and all the confused emotions. While I managed to miss the purity culture onslaught (too old 😆) I was the oldest of three girls, no brothers, and for a long time I wasn’t at all sure how to talk to a guy, especially if he did something that implied extra attention!
I loved this so much and totally relate. I had a similar experience with a bead bracelet at Space Camp (since he told me he found it before giving it to me, I promptly took it to the lost and found). And an offer to carry my backpack in 9th grade horrified me (because he wasn’t my crush). Now I’m wondering if this will all play out differently in this next generation….
Heather, this is wonderfully written. I feel like this could have been me. Oh, it brings so many memories bubbling to the surface. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for your generous words, Erin! I'd probably be proud if one of my boys offered a girl his jacket (the sweater, I'm not sure...). It's funny how time changes us.
I love it, Heather!! Especially those last lines about not waiting until you understand before you write about an event-- the adventure of discovering as you write is why writing is so fun! Thanks for sharing this moment with us; We are all better for it! And poor, fumbling, Brock. I do hope he found someone who wanted his jacket someday.
I'm sure he did. He was a sweet kid, but I was entirely too young and awkward to make sense of such an event. Thanks for your encouraging words, Elizabeth!
Hilarious! I read while cooking supper and laughed out loud.
loooooved this! 😍 so wonderfuly written 🤩
Thank you, Emily!

I'm right there with you! I cringed just recording some of the details! Thanks for reading, Loren.

You had me at "bead bracelet at Space Camp." I love that you took it to the lost and found. Priceless.

Thanks for reading my absurd tale! 😆 I am glad, if empathetic, that it resonates with you!
Heather, I LOVE this. It has the perfect amount of humor and wit. Bless Brock and his sweater. Hahaha.
